EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
