Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
