Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
