Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and homes being swept away by strong flows.

Our team rescued fourteen people who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. One resident frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and another who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is making tropical storms more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events cause approximately US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency on Thursday because of the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
